Dora's Story

Hi! I’m Dora! And I’m ready for exploring. I came to ARTS as a transfer from another rescue. I was attacked by some dogs and then left with a wound until it was infested with maggots after a couple surgeries it has healed up very well, and you wouldn’t know that it was once life threatening!

The attack did leave me a little shaken up though. Because of that I can be quite fearful and I need someone that will be very patient, slow and gentle while they get to know me. If you let me adjust on my own terms it will not take long for me to trust you and you’ll be getting hugs and nose boops in no time.

The attack also left me afraid of other dogs - so far I’ve become close buds with my foster brothers and sisters - but it did take me some time of getting used to them though a baby gate. I growled for the first few days from a place of fear - but now I really love them. So if you have other furry friends please allow me the time I need to warm up to them and know that I may not make the best first impression despite my best efforts.

Please don’t make me move faster than I am comfortable, and I’ll reward you with being a well adjusted member of the family. I don’t mind kitties at all! I pretty much ignore the kitty that lives at my house after some initial curiosity. I’m also very very quiet. My foster family has only heard me bark a couple of times. Otherwise, quiet and polite as a big mouse. I’ve never had an accident inside and even though I don’t know a lot of commands, I try very hard to please. I have excellent food manners and am very gentle.

My family says that I am such a sweet girl now that they have my trust. I'm gentle and give nuzzles and I would fit in well with any family that has lots of love to give me. I don’t mind when you go to work for the day, I know you’ll come home and love me I can do stairs with no issue, and I’m very polite. My personality is starting to shine and you’ll see after some time that I can be a goofy girl! Please be careful when I’m outside before I know you well, I might get scared and try to run if something unexpected happens.

It’s important for me to have a yard because I really like to sit outside and smell the air. Walks are quite scary for me in the city - all the whizzing by cars and strangers, and open fields seem to give me a lot of anxiety - my mom thinks maybe it reminds me of where I was attacked because the big open field makes me completely panic. But the security of a fenced yard makes me feel safe. I know no one will ever hurt me in my own safe yard. I’ll cross my paws and sit beside you while you read your book outside.

I’ve learned that dog beds are great but couches are even better. I’m ready to explore more and bond with my forever family - are you the right person to help bring this explorer out of her shell? Please let the humans know and apply here, they would love to talk to you. Also, in case you are wondering - yes. My foster family DOES sing the Dora the Explorer theme song to me. And yes, I do love it.
